Author's Note: This story has a special place in my heart. It was a favourite of my late mother-in-law, who was an avid reader and for decades burned through about three novels a week. I miss the days of sitting with Avis and discussing books and stories. She was such a classic Kiwi and a strong, intelligent, matriarch.
